Pi Beta Phi

When Pi Beta Phi was founded as the first womens fraternity on April 28, 1867, its members joined together to promote an active presence at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. Since our founding in 1989, the Yale chapter has carried on the traditions of these founding women. One of our top priorities is our commitment to the community in which we live, and our national philanthropic cause is spreading literacy. In the past, we have created a childrens library at Yale New Haven Hospital for all pediatric patients. We volunteer with New Haven Reads, a literacy center near Payne Whitney Gym. Girls from our chapter spend one afternoon every week tutoring children from local elementary schools at this center, a program which won the top award at Pi Phi national convention. We are active in fundraising for these and related causes, such as Colleges Against Cancer and Relay for Life. Pi Phi won the Greek Cup at Relay for Life last year for top fundraising efforts.

Pi Phis are very visible on Yale's campus. With sisters from eight varsity sport teams and over 30 extracurricular activities  ranging from YDN and comedy groups to Community Health Educators and the debate team  Pi Phi's are everywhere. Yet these same busy girls can also be found enjoying the company of their sisters at date parties, mixers and other social events or enjoying a wide range of sisters-only events including weekend retreats, trips for dinner at The Place, Gossip Girl nights at the house, tailgates, scavenger hunts, and more. Because of the tremendous impact of Pi Phi on the lives of its sisters, alumnae are always willing to assist active members in finding job or internship opportunities outside of Yale, and the extensive Pi Phi directory is evidence of that continued connection. Through the years, Pi Phi has changed and expanded, but its members still maintain their dedication to kindness, loyalty, and generosity. We invite you to get to know us, and we hope you will agree that being a member of Pi Phi will open doors to new and lasting friendships.

Kappa Alpha Theta

Kappa Alpha Theta, the first Greek letter society for women, was founded at Ashbury University in Greencastle, Indiana (now DePauw University) on January 27, 1870. The Theta symbol is the kite and the Theta colors are black and gold. Theta was also the first women's fraternity established at Yale, beginning with ten women in 1985. The Epilson Tau chapter of Theta at Yale is now home to 112 members! Thetas are a diverse group of women who are very much a part of the Yale community, with sisters holding leadership roles in varsity athletics, publications, community service organizations and almost every aspect of Yale. Despite being actively involved in campus life, Thetas also love spending time with their sisters. Throughout the semester we have plenty of opportunities to have fun and spend time as a sorority, such as pledge class dinners, theme parties, crushes and formals. Everyone's favorite nights of the year has to be our family nights with our five different lineages.

Theta also provides an opportunity for sisters to become involved with philanthropy and service. Theta's main philanthropy project is raising funds for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children). CASA volunteers watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children caught in the court and child welfare systems. We hold two large philanthropy events each year, our annual Block Party in the fall and Tacky Prom in the spring. In order to also participate in hands on service, Theta runs a weekly tutoring program with SigEp for New Haven students and sisters volunteer together at a New Haven soup kitchen. We have also reached out to the New Haven branch of CASA to be able to directly work with the children they help.

Our newly renovated house is located at 277 Crown Street, home to seven sisters and a beautiful space for members to spend time together and relax after our weekly chapter meetings or on the weekends. Kappa Alpha Theta at Yale is a group of women with diverse extracurricular involvements and academic interests  who have come together to make new friends, have a great time and embrace Theta love. We're so excited to meet you all during recruitment! Check out our facebook page to learn more about us: www.facebook.com/yaletheta

Kappa Kappa Gamma

In 1870, Kappa Kappa Gamma, one of the largest and oldest national womens fraternities, was founded at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois to foster intellectual and social development and to encourage lasting friendships among college women.  Today, this tradition continues at Yale with the Zeta Xi chapter, installed in 1987. Kappas are to be found leading and participating in many organizations on campus, including dance groups, varsity and club sports, outreach organizations and political parties. We take pride in the wide range of accomplishments, talents and experiences of our sisters. We are proud to say we have members in Phi Beta Kappa. Within Kappa, our activities include social events such as formals and Krush parties, as well as sisterhood bonding events like retreats, blind dates with other sisters, and Kore family dinners.

Kappa is also dedicated to community service. Our national philanthropy project is Reading is Fundamental, and Kappas at Yale have volunteered at the New Haven Book Bank for several years. Additionally, we volunteer at a soup kitchen on a weekly basis, as well as form teams for AIDS Walk and Relay for Life. Our Yale chapter is fortunate to have the support of a strong network of local alumnae, and participates actively in national Kappa conventions and events. The chapter also has a house on Park Street, which is the home of eight sisters. It provides a homey and inviting venue for all Kappa sisters to get together for meetings, social activities, or just to hang out and study or watch a movie.  Cooking is a common activity, since we have two kitchens!  We look forward to meeting you, and hope that you will join us in the lifelong bonds of sisterhood!
